Hideyo Noguchi (野口 英世, Noguchi Hideyo, November 9, 1876 – May 21, 1928), also known as Seisaku Noguchi (野口 清作, Noguchi Seisaku), was a prominent Japanese bacteriologist who in 1911 discovered the correlation between the agent of syphilis as the cause of progressive paralytic disease. Noguchi was the first person in the United States to identify the cause of syphilis in 1906. In addition, he produced numerous diagnostic tests for syphilis. He made major contributions to understanding snake venom and immunology. Noguchi was one of the first Japanese scientists to gain international acclaim and recognition for his work.
