'Jais is an ancient town near Jais station in Amethi district, Uttar Pradesh, renowned for its association with the Hindi poet Malik Muhammad Jaisi. He composed his famous work *Padmavat* here, and he was called 'Jaisi' because he lived in Jais.
In the first quatrain of the 23rd couplet of *Padmavat*, the poet himself states:
"Jais nagar dharam-asthanu, tahan aay kavi kinh bakhanu."
This suggests that Jais was considered a holy place for the Muslim community at that time, indicating that Jaisi settled here from another location and wrote *Padmavat* during his stay. The composition period of *Padmavat* is noted as 927 Hijri, or 1527 AD. Additionally, Ujalikpur is another name that may have been used for Jais in earlier times.
Situated in the culturally rich region of Awadh, Jais has significantly contributed to the development of Awadhi culture.
