James Arthur Surls (born 1943) is an American modernist artist and educator, known for his large sculptures. He founded the Lawndale Alternative Arts Space at the University of Houston in the 1970s.[1]
He graduated from Sam Houston State Teachers College in 1966 and from Cranbrook Academy of Art in1968.
