Karawaci is a town and an administrative district (kecamatan) of Tangerang City, in Banten Province of Indonesia, on the island of Java. The district covers an area of 13.48 km2, and had a population of 171,317 at the 2010 Census[2] and 184,388 at the 2020 Census;[3] the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 193,480.[1] Lippo Karawaci, a planned community, is located here.
This district formed part of the particuliere landerij, or private domain, of the Oey family of Karawatji, part of the 'Cabang Atas' landowning gentry of colonial Java.[4] Oey Djie San, head of the family at the turn of the century, served as Kapitein der Chinezen of Tangerang.[5]
