Although my father is Black and my mother has very dark hair and eyes, I was born with fair skin, a pile of bright blonde curls, and blue eyes. I look nothing like either of my parents or my brother. [...] At the time of the first dermal eruption, my mom sat my older brother and me down to tell us 'wonderful, exciting news!' We were relocating to Clearwater, Florida. [...] We were currently living in La Crescenta, California, a small suburb north of Los Angeles. [...] My best friend, Samantha, lived four blocks away. [...] Within those four blocks, our whole lives were contained. Within those four blocks, all of our stories occurred. Our childhood was simple and small just like our quiet suburb and I always believed it would stay that way."
