Matthew G. Carter (October 16, 1913 – March 14, 2012) was an American pastor and politician who served as the Mayor of Montclair, New Jersey from 1968 to 1972, becoming the first African American to serve as Mayor of Montclair.[1][2] Carter also served as the chairman of the New Jersey State Commission on Civil Rights.[1]
