Michael Fakhri is the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food and an associate professor of Law and the University of Oregon.
Fakhri was appointed to his position as Special Rapporteur by the UN Human Rights Council and assumed his functions on May 1, 2020.[1] he served as an independent advisor to the UN summit on food systems but was critical of its effectiveness.[2] Fakhri called on the government of Venezuela to develop a robust plan to address hunger and malnutrition and for an end to the economic sanctions imposed on the country.[3] He believes that Israel is deliberately starving Palestinians in Gaza saying "In my view as a UN human rights expert, this is now a situation of genocide."[4]
