Parramatta (/ˌpærəˈmætə/; Dharuk: Burramatta) is a major suburb in the City of Parramatta and commercial district in Greater Western Sydney,[7][8] located approximately 24 kilometres (15 mi) west of the Sydney CBD, on the banks of the Parramatta River.[2] It is currently regarded as the secondary central business district in metropolitan Sydney, but it is moving ahead towards becoming a global city and a significant city in Australia in its own right by 2050.[9]
Parramatta is the administrative seat of the local government area of the City of Parramatta and is often regarded as one of the primary centres of the Greater Sydney metropolitan area, along with Sydney City, Penrith, and Liverpool.[10] Parramatta also has a long history as a second administrative centre in the Sydney metropolitan region, playing host to a number of state government departments[11] as well as state and federal courts. It is often colloquially referred to as "Parra".
Parramatta, founded as a British settlement in 1788, the same year as Sydney, is the oldest inland European settlement in Australia and is the economic centre of Greater Western Sydney.[12] Since 2000, government agencies such as the New South Wales Police Force and Sydney Water[13] have relocated to Parramatta from Central Sydney. The 151st meridian east runs through the suburb.
