Peanut butter test

Peanut butter test
PurposeAn attempt to detect Alzheimer's disease

The peanut butter test is a diagnostic test which aims to detect Alzheimer's disease by measuring subjects' ability to smell peanut butter through each nostril. The original study, published in the Journal of the Neurological Sciences in October 2013, involves measuring the ability of people to smell peanut butter held close to their nose. The researchers believe that people with Alzheimer's were not able to smell the peanut butter as well through their left nostril as their right one.[1]

However, these results were somewhat inconclusive due to a small sample size and unable to be replicated in a subsequent study.
