"Platform tennis – nicknamed paddle – got its start in 1928 in Scarsdale, N.Y., when Fessenden F. Blanchard and James K. Cogswell sought an outdoor game as a winter substitute for tennis. By 1935 the game had gained enough momentum for the first national championship to be held at the Fox Meadow Club in Scarsdale."
