Richard Carey was from Elizabeth City County, Virginia. He studied law and then practiced in the county courts.^[1]

Owned Boldrup Plantation at some point after 1782.

Served in Fifth Virginia Convention in 1776 and on Virginia Ratifying Convention in 1788.

Married Mary Cole, daughter of William Cole (burgess).
