Root is a town in Montgomery County, New York, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. The town was named for Erastus Root, a legislator in the early Federal period.[3]

The Town of Root is in the south-central part of the county and is southwest of Amsterdam.

The Erie Canal passes the northern part of Root.
