Rowland Hazard III (October 29, 1881 – December 20, 1945) was an American businessman and member of a prominent Rhode Island family involved in the foundation and executive leadership of a number of well-known companies. He is also known as the "Rowland H." who figured in the events leading to the formation of Alcoholics Anonymous.[1]
- ^ Although Rowland Hazard's full name in connection with the formation of Alcoholics Anonymous has been known for years, the Traditions of AA recommend that AA members maintain their anonymity at the level of media, in keeping with the spirit of placing "principles before personalities." Members typically refer to themselves publicly, if at all, by first name and last initial only. After the 1971 death of AA co-founder Bill W. and publication of his full name in obituaries, the AA General Service Conference advised that "AA members generally think it unwise to break the anonymity of a member even after his death, but in each situation the final decision must rest with the family." Rowland Hazard, however, apparently never considered himself a member of AA.
