Russian is one of the two official languages of Belarus (the other being Belarusian). Due to its dominance in media, education, and other areas of public life, Russian is de facto the most widely spoken language in the country, a result of the Soviet period in its history and post-Soviet era development. However, in rural areas, literary Belarusian is still not the main language. The most frequently used variation is 'trasianka,' a mix of literary Belarusian and Russian.
