The Congregation of the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer (Latin: Filii Sanctissimi Redemptoris; FSSR), commonly known as The Sons, are a religious institute of the Catholic Church canonically erected in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Aberdeen and based on Papa Stronsay in the Orkney Islands, Scotland, as well as in the city of Christchurch, New Zealand, until they got sanctioned by the Bishop in July 2024. The community was originally formed in 1988 as a traditional offshoot of the Redemptorists, following a rule based on that of Saint Alphonsus De Liguori. It was formally erected as a religious institute in 2012.
The Bishop of Christchurch, Michael Gielen, said in a statement he had received a series of recommendations from the Vatican which have been accepted. "I am removing the faculties of the priests of the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer to exercise sacred ministry in the Christchurch Diocese," Gielen said. "All professed members of the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer have been asked to leave the Christchurch diocese."[1]
