Split (bowling)

Conversion of the 4-5-7 split. Right-handed delivery using pearl coverstock bowling ball approaches from an angle to give the 4-pin enough forward momentum to contact the 7-pin. A straight head-on zero-angle splitting of the 4-5 gap would likely have sent the 4-pin sideways into the gutter without ever contacting the 7-pin.

A split is a situation in ten pin bowling in which the first ball of a frame knocks down the headpin ("number 1 bowling pin") but leaves standing two or more non-adjacent groups of one or more pins. Scoring a spare in this situation is often referred to as a "killer shot".[citation needed]
