A stanitsa or stanitza (/stəˈniːtsə/; Russian: станица [stɐˈnʲitsə]), also spelled stanycia (станиця [stɐˈnitsʲɐ] in Ukrainian) or stanica (станіца [stɐˈɲitsɐ] in Belarusian), was a historical administrative unit of a Cossack host, a type of Cossack polity that existed in the Russian Empire.
