The character was created by series producer Shonda Rhimes and portrayed by actress Jerrika Hinton from 2012 to 2017. Introduced as a surgical intern at the fictional Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital, later renamed Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, Stephanie works her way up to the resident level alongside fellow intern and friend, Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington).
