The Syntrophaceae family, belonging to the Syntrophobacterales order, comprises of four genera: Syntrophus, Smithella, Desulfobacca, and Desulfomonile. All members have rod-shaped cells and do not form spores. As gram negative bacteria, the presence of a thin cell wall and a double membrane is notable. Theoretically, these bacteria are expected to be red or pink in color; however, no pictures have been recorded.
