Gold teeth also know as Grillz are custom made jewelry that one wears on their teeth. Grillz can be chosen to be made of one of three metals, silver, gold or platinum. Gold is most commonly used hence the adopted term gold teeth, gold teeth is also a term used in dentistry for gold crowns. But unlike gold crowns, grillz are not permanent. Grillz are also not universal for fitment, meaning a grill will only fit the person it was made for. Like fingerprints, teeth are unique for each individual. To make a grill, an impression must be made from the individual’s teeth. A stone mold is then made from the impression and from there the process of making a grill can be started. However the design of the grill must be made prior to making the grill.
A grill can consist up to as many caps as teeth. If eight teeth are covered, the grill consists of eight caps. Options such as diamond cuts, open faces and diamond settings are available if one desires more than just a polished finish. Diamond cuts are special patterns made onto the surface of the cap using a diamond cutter. Cuts will add sparkle to the grill. Diamond cutting requires a very steady and skilled hand. Open faces are openings on the grill that show the teeth behind the grill. Open faces can be made into different shapes and sizes and even letters. Diamond setting is embedding diamonds or precious stones into the grill. Settings can be done in different ways as well as the design. Because even the smallest diamonds used have depth to them, the area where the diamonds are to be embedded must have thickness to attribute the diamond setting. There are three types of settings; pave, channel and invisible. 3/D bars are the most commonly used for pave settings. This means that the cap has a bar that comes off a little so that it is thick enough for the diamond setting. A 3/D bar can be as small for one diamond or can come across a number of caps to embed numerous diamonds. 3/D bars can be made into any shape or design. Iced out designs is when the caps are completely filled with diamonds. This also a pave setting but does not use a 3/D bar, instead the grill is thicker to accommadate the diamond settings. A channel setting is very similar to an invisible setting They both use larger diamonds, only difference is channel settings use round diamonds and invisible uses square. When set it is the pressure from the diamonds pressing against each other that hold everything in place. Although diamonds are mainly the stones used, some prefer to use gems, jewels, and many other precious stones.
Grillz have become very popular because of the influence in hip hop culture, but in other countries, gold teeth are signs of wealth. Grillz are believed to have started sometime during the mid 80’s, but grillz most likely have been around even before that .
