The closers have assessed this discussion and after some discussion and debate between no consensus either way and consensus in favour we have decided that: There is consensus that this article be moved from Hillary Rodham Clinton to Hillary Clinton. While other articles were proposed to be moved we don't believe that there has been adequate discussion about this given that this move request was focused on this article and the change to this article's title will affect those discussions.
In closing this discussion:
- We haven't given any weight to the arguments that because she is a woman and chose to keep her maiden name Wikipedia should be bound by that as we can't see that that is reflected in the article titles policy (see following dot points as well).
- We haven't given weight to the arguments that argue that 'it's about what her name is' due to paragraph two at WP:COMMONNAME.
- We note that WP:MOS#Identity (regarding the subject's preference) is only considered if we don't believe that there is a consensus either way or if we believe that there is agreement that there are two 'common names'. Related to this the subject's "offical" name is not considered, rather it's what used in reliable sources.
- We have only considered the arguments in this request (not previous discussions about the same issue) based on the principle that consensus can change and there have been changes both to Wikipedia policy and the subject since the last discussion. However users who referred to their own argument on a different page have been considered.
- We have not considered arguments which relied solely on the count of Google hits for each title.
Regarding the reasons for deciding to move this article, based on the criteria in article titles policy and WP:COMMONNAME we have assessed the following from the discussion:
- Recognizability - there are stronger arguments in favour of HC as users stated that HC so no less recognisable than HRC but the opposite is not true.
- Naturalness - stronger arguments in favour of HC.
- Precision - there doesn't seem to be a preference in favour of either HRC or HC as they both adequately identify the subject.
- Conciseness - clearer and stronger argument in favour of HC.
- Consistency - consistency between articles doesn't matter too much as this is the bellwether article.
- Common name - there were arguments both ways and this was the major point of contention and discussion, our assessment of the discussion is that there is a stronger agreement toward HC.
One of the reasons against the move we discussed was whether there was a sufficient consensus to meet the "good reason" requirement of WP:TITLECHANGES. After discussion we have determined that the consensus here is sufficient to meet this requirement.
