The template has two unnamed parameters. The first parameter is for the year or years. The second parameter is for the main content of the colspan. For instance, the above example has the following input:
In a sortable table, colspans always sort in the same way, and can make some columns very difficult to read. This template is customised for each column, sorting in the least disruptive way based on the other data in the column. For instance, in the league positions column, it sorts below 24th place. In the goals scored column, it sorts below 0, so that the most goals scored sorts at the top.
