[1] publication contents at the Internet Speculative Fiction Database
The ISFDB contents template message is usually placed in the External links or References section of a speculative fiction Wikipedia article to provide a link to one "Publication Listing" in the Internet Speculative Fiction Database (ISFDB). For any publication, not limited to a magazine or collection, those details include a table of contents. As an External link the tag is intended to inform people that a detailed contents listing is available on ISFDB as a support reference for the article.
As ISFDB indexes contents listings by a record number rather than by their name, you will always need to provide the record number when using this template. The record number is available at the end of the URL for a listing on ISFDB. You always need to provide the title, and often the date, of the listing, using the title and issue parameters. For example, the listing for Analog Science Fiction –> Science Fact, October 1967 is on ISFDB at http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?56815. The record number in this case is 56815, meaning you would use either {{ISFDB contents|id=56815|title=Analog|issue=October 1967}}
or {{ISFDB contents|56815|title=Analog|issue=October 1967}}
to link to that contents record.
A link to the Analog issue mentioned above:
* {{ISFDB contents|56815|title=Analog|issue=October 1967}}
displays as
and links to http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?56815 .
A link to the omnibus edition of the Prydain children's fantasy series:
* {{ISFDB contents|45699|title=The Prydain Chronicles|issue=(1991 omnibus)}}
displays as
and links to http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?45699 .
ISFDB lists only one edition in this case, so the issue parameter is a free-form note and optional. Without it:
* {{ISFDB contents|45699|title=The Prydain Chronicles|issue= }}
displays as
and links to http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?45699 .
If an edition is listed just after (for example) the top-level record for the corresponding work, the title parameter may be omitted. It does not make sense to omit both title and issue, of course.
{{ISFDB title|861|title=The White Dragon}}
{{ISFDB contents|351495|title=|issue=UK paperback 15th ed.}}
If the article is connected to a Wikidata item that has a ISFDB publication ID (P1234) statement with the appropriate ID, that will be picked up automatically and does not need to be entered.
{{ISFDB contents|title=Weird Tales|issue=(September 1934)}}
and links to http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?62137 by accessing the data from Weird Tales, vol. 24, no. 3 (Q15968117).
