Note that this template is to cover all American Championship car racing and IndyCar Series events a driver has competed in. The former, in the first ("Champ Car") section, comprise those sanctioned by AAA, USAC, and CART; this includes the Indianapolis 500s in 1981 and 1982, but does not include any races run under Indy Racing League sanction, including all Indianapolis 500s from 1996 onwards.
The second section includes all Indy Racing League/IndyCar-sanctioned events from 1996 to the present.
The 2008 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, run under IRL sanction but using CART equipment and rules, is a special case; for most drivers it should be counted as an IRL event in the infobox, but for some CART drivers who ran it as their only IRL race (e.g. Alex Figge) it may be more logical to place it under the Champ Car section. Use common sense.
