This template is a customized wrapper for {{Infobox settlement}} and as such included in Category:Templates calling Infobox settlement. Any field from {{Infobox settlement}} can work so long as it is added to this template first. It will also emit the same hCard and Geo microformats as {{Infobox settlement}}. Questions? Usage

This template works for the following types of English counties:

The following counties for the purposes of the Local Government Act 1972:
- Non-metropolitan counties with a county council and no unitary authorities, such as Surrey (two-tier counties).
- Non-metropolitan counties with a coterminous district, with a county council but no district council, such as Northumberland (unitary counties).
- Metropolitan counties, such as the West Midlands and Greater Manchester
The following counties for the purposes of the Lieutenancies Act 1997:
- Counties comprising a county council area and also unitary authority areas, such as Buckinghamshire (hybrid counties)
- Counties comprising multiple unitary authority areas (one sharing the county name), such as Wiltshire
- Counties comprising multiple unitary authority areas (none sharing the county name), such as Cheshire
- Greater London

Use {{Infobox settlement}} for counties that are also cities, such as Bristol and City of London as well as counties for the purposes of the Local Government Act 1972 where there is a coterminous district with a district council, but no county council, such as Milton Keynes.

Population data is pulled automatically from the following templates:

For ceremonial counties

(using the 'Official name' field as the input)

Template:English cerem counties

For both non-metropolitan and unitary counties

(using the 'GSS code' field as the input)

For non-metropolitan counties only

(using the 'GSS code' field as the input)

For single unitary authority counties only

(using the 'GSS code' field as the input)

The metropolitan counties and the London Region have multiple GSS codes (e.g. Greater Manchester has E11000001 for the met. county and E47000001 for the city region) and therefore do not pull down data automatically as the GSS code field could be easily broken by well-meaning editors. Instead, for these areas, the Template:UK subdivision population, Template:UK subdivision area and Template:UK subdivision density templates should be inputted into the population_council, area_council_km2 and density_council fields respectively using their met. county code or region code in the case of Greater London. If these fields are used for other types of county, they will not display nor override the automatic data.
