Unlike in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland where there is a uniform pattern of local government, places in England are, broadly speaking, in one of several categories:

• Places in London (see here)
• Places in unitary authority areas (see here)
• Places in metropolitan counties
• Places in 'two-tier' shire counties
