Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux was a 19th-century
French sculptor and
painter who sought to inject movement and spontaneity into his works. This
engraving, done to commemorate him after his death, shows his sculpture
Flore below him, and others of his works above. In his time, some of his works, particularly
La Danse, were criticised as
indecent, but today his sculptures are exhibited in major
museums of art worldwide.
