William McKinley, the 25th
President of the United States, giving his last public address at the
Pan-American Exposition in
Buffalo, New York, standing under the gazebo, hatless, wearing a tuxedo and holding speech notes in his hand, one day before he was
shot on September 6, 1901. One
bullet was extracted, but the second was not, and McKinley eventually died of
gangrene from his wound, eight days later.
