A house tipped over as a result of the
1900 Galveston hurricane, which made landfall in
Galveston, Texas, 110 years ago today. The
Category 4 hurricane was responsible for approximately 8,000 deaths, making it the deadliest
natural disaster to strike the United States to date (in comparison, 1,800 people died as a result of
Hurricane Katrina). After striking Galveston, the storm blew northward to the
Great Lakes, then headed eastward just north of
Halifax, Nova Scotia, before disappearing into the Atlantic Ocean.
