Two
banknotes for
Confederate States of America dollars, in five (top) and 100 dollar (bottom) amounts. The notes were first issued just before the outbreak of the
Civil War by the
Confederacy. They were not backed by hard assets, but simply by a promise to pay the bearer after Confederate victory. By the end of the war, the notes were worthless. Today, the "Greybacks" are prized as collector's items.
