The
Yogapith temple in
Mayapur,
West Bengal, India, is a shrine constructed at the birth site of
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486–1533). It was erected in the 1880s by
Bhaktivinoda Thakur (1838–1914), a leading Gaudiya Vaishnava reformer and teacher, when, after much research, he rediscovered Chaitanya's original birthplace. Chaitanya founded
Gaudiya Vaishnavism, better known in the West by its branch, the
International Society for Krishna Consciousness, or the Hare Krishna movement.
