as the site for a shop and maintenance complex, Altoona was incorporated in 1868. It grew rapidly, from a population of approximately 2,000 in 1854 to almost 20,000 in 1880. Presently the Altoona
metropolitan area
is home to 127,089, and the local economy has diversified to include
healthcare
and
retail
.
