Eruptions at
Mount Etna, a volcano in
Sicily, on the night of 16–17 November 2013. This active
stratovolcano is the largest of the three
active volcanoes in Italy, covering an area of 1,190 km
2 (459 sq mi) and reaching a height of 3,329 m (10,922 ft). One of the world's most active volcanoes, its fertile volcanic soils support extensive agriculture. Due to its recent activity and nearby population, Mount Etna has been designated a
Decade Volcano by the United Nations.
