Agrius convolvuli, the convolvulus hawk-moth, is a common moth found in Europe, Asia, Africa and Australasia, in the family
Sphingidae. The larvae feed on the leaves of
convolvulus and a range of other plants, and can be a pest of cultivated
sweet potato. Mostly active around dusk, the adult moth can use its
proboscis, which is longer than its body, to sip nectar from flowers while hovering nearby, transferring
pollen between blooms. This
A. convolvuli moth, seen here feeding with its proboscis extended, was photographed in
Rila Monastery Nature Park in Bulgaria.
