Salmon P. Chase
(January 13, 1808 – May 7, 1873) was an American politician and jurist who served as the sixth
chief justice of the United States
. He also served as the
23rd governor of Ohio
and represented the state in the
United States Senate
. He served as the 25th
secretary of the treasury
, leading to his being featured on the last version of the U.S.
$10,000 bill
. He sought the
Republican
nomination for president in the
1860 presidential election
, but the party chose
Abraham Lincoln
at
the national convention
. This
