Taxonomy templates
Taxobox templates
Template:Virusbox displays an automatic taxobox for viruses and other non-cellular life forms.
The parameters are generally a subset of those for Template:Speciesbox or Template:Automatic taxobox. However, this template ensures that names are italicized for all viral taxa except those of ranks below species. The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses taxonomy should be used.
Basic parameters for ranks of genus or higher, or species where it is necessary to have a species taxonomy template:
{{Virusbox
| image =
| image_alt =
| image_caption =
| taxon = (taxon that has a taxonomy template)
| synonyms =
| synonyms_ref =
| subdivision_ranks =
| subdivision =
}}
Basic parameters for species, where a taxonomy template for the species is not needed:
{{Virusbox
| image =
| image_alt =
| image_caption =
| parent = (genus or subgenus that has a taxonomy template)
| species = (species that does not have a taxonomy template)
| synonyms =
| synonyms_ref =
| subdivision_ranks =
| subdivision =
}}
Ranks below species – a single rank below species, e.g. a strain, a serotype, or a "virus", can be added to a template like that shown above, when neither the below-species taxon nor the species has a taxonomy template. Multiple ranks below species should be set up using taxonomy templates. Such infraspecies ranks are not regulated by the ICTV. They will not be italicized by this template.
ICVCN 3.4 The ICTV is not responsible for classification and nomenclature of virus taxa below the rank of species. The classification and naming of serotypes, genotypes, strains, variants and isolates of virus species is the responsibility of acknowledged international specialist groups.
Comment: A variety of subspecific grouping may be identified within the members of a single virus species. These may be described as viruses with alternative names (e.g., blackeye cowpea mosaic virus and peanut stripe virus, which are both classified in the species Bean common mosaic virus, genus Potyvirus, family Potyviridae), or as serotypes, genotypes, clades, strains, variants, isolates etc. [...][1]
In general, a non-species name ending with "virus" should be assigned to parameter |virus=
(e.g. Bovine coronavirus). Serotypes are usually indicated by "serotype" or "subtype" (e.g. Influenza A virus subtype H1N1). Names such as RaTG13 and H1N1/09 are usually strains.
If |name=
is not specified, the taxobox name (header) will default to the taxon that is the target of the taxobox. This is different from other taxobox templates, where the page name (page title) is the default. One reason is that a virus taxobox may be included in an articles on a diseases caused by the virus, so the page name is not appropriate.
