"helps web browsers display it correctly" Which browsers have problems displaying kanji and are helped by this template? --Apoc2400 (talk) 21:39, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- If you view a web page in English which contains a kanji character, the browser needs to pick an appropriate font. This template suggests to the browser that it should select a Japanese font for the character. Without the template, the browser won't know this and might select a different font (my browser selects a Chinese font), making the text look wrong. For example, compare 神 (Japanese) with 神 (Hong Kong Chinese). For me, the character looks quite different depending on the language of the font. This is also a bit annoying when editing Wikipedia pages since the 神 character is displayed as its kyūjitai form in the edit box. (Stefan2 (talk) 20:53, 16 October 2011 (UTC))[reply]
