Tenzing Norgay GM OSN (/ˈtɛnzɪŋ ˈnɔːrɡeɪ/; Sherpa: བསྟན་འཛིན་ནོར་རྒྱས tendzin norgyé; May 1914 – 9 May 1986), born Namgyal Wangdi, and also referred to as Sherpa Tenzing,[1] was a Nepalese-Indian Sherpa mountaineer.[2][3] He was one of the first two people confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest, which he accomplished with Edmund Hillary on 29 May 1953.[4] Time named Norgay one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.[5]
