It was started in 2000 and is part of The Best American Series published by Houghton Mifflin. The series is available through Mariner Books, which since 2019 is an imprint of HarperCollins.
Burkhard Bilger was the series editor for 2000 and 2001. Tim Folger was the series editor from 2002 to 2018. Jaime Green has been the series editor since 2019.
