Tonglen is a Buddhist practice that involves breathing in the suffering of others and breathing out peace and healing. Its purpose is to cultivate compassion.
Tong means "giving or sending", and len means "receiving or taking".[1] Tonglen is also known as "exchanging self with other."[according to whom?][2] It's the seventh slogan, under Relative Bodhicitta[importance?], in Lojong. And is aspirational Bodhicitta precepts training in the Longchen Nyingthig Ngöndro, to see others as equal to self by exchanging self and other, where applying Bodhicitta begins with giving.
