U.S. Route 71 (US 71) is a major north–south U.S. Highway that runs from Louisiana to Canada. US 71 enters Arkansas from Louisiana near the town of Doddridge. US 71 serves the cities of Texarkana, Fort Smith, Fayetteville, Springdale, and Bentonville. The highway is currently designated as High Priority Corridor #1 and is projected to be upgraded to Interstate 49 (I-49). From Fort Smith through Northwest Arkansas the highway is concurrent with I-540
