User:Donner60/American Civil War bibliography from Internet

User:Donner60 This is a Wikipedia user page. This is not an encyclopedia article. If you find this page on any site other than Wikipedia, you are viewing a mirror site. This page contains a bibliography of American Civil War books, mostly older books, and some journal or magazine articles downloaded from the Internet and, in many cases, stored on my computer in pdf format. A short section contains information about several old books retrieved from the Internet which might be cited in articles with some frequency as they are mostly references. I have downloaded the titles and they are repeated in the longer section of titles of books on my computer. These titles are (or should be) in proper form for citation in Wikipedia articles.

Until February 23, 2014, I had one increasingly large page entitled "ACW References." It was becoming too long so I created an additional page entitled "American Civil War bibliography" for a list of the books that I own. These also are in proper format for citation in articles.

I include on this page a section on articles taken from encyclopedias, compendiums or anthologies that I own and that I have used in American Civil War articles (provided I remembered to include them) because this page is shorter than the bibliography page. I also have a section for titles of modern books with internet previews that I do not own but have used for citations (again provided I have remembered to include them).

Wikipedia's manual of style and formatting guidelines require only that certain information be included in a reference. More than one style or format is permissible. In the absence of a further requirement, I will use the allowable Chicago Manual of Style format as adopted by Hal Jespersen User:Hlj as in line with the Wikipedia guidelines. I agree with Hal that they are easier to work with, understand, and edit when placed in this form in the underlying source page for an article.

After my short list of books likely to be frequently cited, I repeat that list in the alternate Wikipedia style for use in any articles in which that style might be preferred due to existing citations in that form.

Thanks to Hal Jespersen User:Hlj for his American Civil War bibliography and his publication of it on his user pages for open use. I started this list with his formatting for all of the books that we both own. I noted those books with an additional symbol but decided with my revision of June 18, 2013 to remove the notations. They are unlikely to be of interest to anyone but me and the additional mark must be deleted each time I use the entry for a book from this list for an article.

This list is incomplete. I probably will only add entries when I use them for edits because I will need to add web page links. It would take more time than I am likely to want to spend in order to add all of the remaining titles. Last addition or update: February 23, 2014.
