War Machine (James Rhodes) is a fictional character, a superhero, appearing in comic books set in the Marvel Comics universe. The character of James Rhodes first appeared in Iron Man #118 (January 1979) written by David Michelinie and Bob Layton with art by Layton and John Byrne. The War Machine armor, which became Rhodes' signature armored battlesuit, was designed by Len Kaminski and Kevin Hopgood and introduced in Iron Man #282 (July 1992).
The character has been a long term supporting character in Iron Man and related titles as well as being featured in a number of other series, including self titled series. He has also been a featured character in various television shows and films based on Iron Man and related characters.
