Projects
The Library has partnered with the Welsh Government on a number of Grant funded projects focused around improving Welsh language content and the National Wikimedian has also been exploring other avenues of funding in order to deliver innovative events and projects. Below is information about all externally funded projects.
Wicipop
In January 2017, With a Grant from the the Welsh Language department of the Welsh Government, the National Library and WMUK embarked on a three month project to improve Welsh language Wicipedia content about Pop music and popular culture. The project will consist of a series of events, content and data sharing partnerships and experimentation in automatically creating articles by using data. WiciIechyd
Following the success of the Wicipop project, funded by a Welsh Government grant, The National Library made a successful request for £40,000 funding from the Welsh Government in order to run a 9 month project aimed at improving health related content on the Welsh language Wikipedia. The project focused on community engagement, securing the release of openly licensed health texts and using data, and machine translation to automatically generate Welsh language Wikipedia content. Wicipobl
The Wicipobl (Wiki People) project, was funded by the Welsh Government and managed by the National Library of Wales' National Wikimedia in partnership with Menter Iaith Món (December 2018-March 2019). The aim of the project was to share NLW collections openly in order to help improve the quality of information about Welsh people on the Welsh langauge Wikipedia. The whole project was structured using Europeana's impact playbook in order to better monitor the impacts of this GLAM-Wiki collaboration. A full impact report has been published.
Dictionary of Welsh Biography timeline
The Dictionary of Welsh Biography timeline project is was funded by the MY-D Foundation in Switzerland. The project will be managed by NLW and the timeline will be developed by Histropedia. The Timeline will use Wikidata and open images shared by NLW to develop a bilingual interactive timeline on dictionary of Welsh biography content.
WiciAddysg
The WiciAddesg Project or Wiki-Education project was funded by the Welsh Government and delivered by NLW in partnership with Menter Iaith Mon. This was a pilot project aimed at identifiying and improving Welsh articles most likely to be used by school pupils to help with their studies. We choose the subject of History and worked with teachers to identify the 100 most important articles, which were then created or improved by securing the release of exisiting educational resources and adapting them for Wikipedia. a series of short videos were also produced specifrically aimed at children. The planned schools outreach element of the project had be be adapted due to Covid-19, and in it's place more video content was produced including a series of Wicipedia tutorials by young Wesh speakers.
