The Chiefs Baseball League was founded in 2007 by the five charter members: Palmetto (currently based in Jacksonville), Fruit Cove, Cooper City, Palm Beach, and Sopchoppy.
The original competition format consisted of 12 teams accruing wins based on head-to-head competition on a weekly basis. Every matchup consists of two teams attempting to outplay each other in 15 statistical categories. For every category a team leads against their weekly opponent, the winning franchise receives a "win" and is added to the win total for the year. Consequently, for every category a team does not win, a "loss" is added to their loss total. At the end of the weekly matchup, if both teams share the same statisical value for a one category, then both teams will receive a "tie" and attributed to their totals accordingly.
Starting in the 2009 season, the competition committee elected to dissolve the accrual of categorical wins and instead adopted a more traditional method of formulating wins and losses. The team with the most categorical wins during a weekly matchup will receive one win and the opposing team one loss. Concordantly, one can amass as many wins as there are weeks in the regular season schedule.
The League Manager is acting Commissioner and is responsible for enforcing rules and balancing the budget. The role of Commissioner also facilitates discussion between owners regarding regular season schedules, draft dates, and changes to the league charter. The League Manager may be called upon to settle trade disputes and has the right to veto any trade deemed unfair or detrimental to the competitive spirit of the League. The CBL Headquarters is located in Jacksonville, Florida, where the Commissioner also resides.
