With the withdrawal of the Gods, the great curse laid upon the creations of Rallos Zek—the Ogres, Goblins, Orcs, and Giants—was lifted, and they soon united under the Avatar of War, Rallos Zek's chosen emissary, to form the most terrible Army Norrath had ever seen. Gukta, the swamp city of the Frogloks, was the first to fall to the Rallosian Army. Halas, the city of Northmen, soon fell as well, its survivors fleeing to the great Western city of Qeynos. Qeynos and its Eastern counterpart, Freeport, girded for war, but they were vastly outnumbered.
During this final battle, the Battle of Defiance, however, the Gods' Avatars, those they had chosen to represent their interests, turned the tide. While the Avatars of War and Flame led the attackers, the Avatars of Tranquility and Storms led those defending the cities. Even so, the Rallosians seemed destined to prevail. Just as the outcome seemed inevitable, though, the Avatar of Fear unleashed the terrible Greenmist upon the Ogres, revenge for their defiling of the Temple of Cazic-Thule, and the Avatar of Below initiated a great quake that swallowed the Orcs and Giants, punishment for their exploitation of the Gnolls.
The Avatars of War and Flame fell as their Army disintegrated and retreated. In the East, Lucan D'Lere took advantage of the confusion to claim the legendary sword Soulfire as his own, and to turn his army against the Knights of Truth and Love who had risen to his city's defense. The last defenders of honor were thus finally driven from Freeport, and D'Lere became the Overlord.
