#1 Peer Review of Alpha-Keratin, by Kevin
- In the sentence: "There, they go thorough a process known as nucleation, where the keratin precursors of dimers and filaments elongate, fuse, and bundle together. ", the they is vague and should be replaced.
- In this sentence: "However, if necessary, the keratin will disassemble into non-filamentous keratin precursors that will diffuse throughout the cell cytoplasm, able to be used in future keratin synthesis, either to re-organize the final structure or create different keratin. When the cell has been filled with the correct keratin, it undergoes keratin stabilization and dies." the sentence should be clarified and rearranged to better explain the concept. Right now, it might be a little difficult for high school students to understand.
- The section on Type I and II keratin I feel could be explained a little more clearly.
- Overall, I feel that the section is organized clearly and the content is distributed equally. The sentence structure and voice is appropriate, and the writing is clear for the most part. Also, the diagram included is clear and illustrative.

- First Section:
- All I can say it GREAT! Extremely easy to follow and 100% understandable. You relate it to real world material which makes it interesting and relatable.
- Structure:
- The beginning part of this section is great but towards the end it dives into a lot of science related terminology which can confusing to people who do not have a lot of knowledge in the area. This can be fixed with light simply explanations after in-depth scientific explanations.
- Synthesis:
- I did not see any changes needed, again great job!
- Properties
- Minor spelling errors, I went ahead and made those corrections.
- Over all great job! Especially the last sentence giving a brief explanation of why alpha-keratin loses strength under high water content.
- Type 1 and Type 2:
- Over all good, but needs a little more explanation on what makes them acidic or basic. The reader should leave without any assumptions. Is it do to more acidic amino acids being present or?
