‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān (عثمان بن عفان) (c. 580 - July 17 656) is the third Caliph of Islam and is regarded by Sunni Muslims as the third of the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs of Islam. He reigned from 644 until 656. However, Shia Muslims believe Ali was the first legitimate ruler, and discount the rule of the first three Caliphs, including Uthman.
