Hello, I'm Rehman. I was born in Manama and have lived there for about a decade, before moving to my current location in Colombo, Sri Lanka. My interests include researching, photographing, writing about, and developing renewable energy (particularly solar and wind power), and limnology (i.e. dams and rivers), hence my work here on Wikipedia (and Commons) also mostly circle around these areas.

Things I enjoy include travelling, hiking, community work (cleanups, building/renovating schools, etc), building computers, photography, star gazing, and most things in between. My real-life work experience includes banking, renewable energy, and cybersecurity. Outside content writing, I work on improving infoboxes and navigation templates, attend to admin tasks on the English Wikipedia and Commons, Wikidata-related work, offline Wiki(m)pedia outreach, and other related things. Wherever needed, I also help improve policy and guideline pages, as I strongly believe that these pages need to be very simple, clear, and up to date, particularly on rapidly growing sites like Wikipedia and Commons. If you require any private assistance, including stopping cyberbullies, please feel free to email me and I'd be glad to assist in whichever way I can.

If you are interested in topics relating to, or are from Sri Lanka, do consider joining the Wikimedia Community User Group for Sri Lanka. It is an official Wikimedia usergroup for interested editors, regardless of language background or which Wikimedia project your are contributing to. We are on the lookout for more experienced hands in order to do more serious projects with wider impact (such as FOP in Sri Lanka!). Your assistance in spreading awareness of this group is also much welcomed. You may also wish to join Wikimedia-LK, the usergroup's official mailing list.

Weise's epitaph in Eisenberg, Germany
Weise's epitaph in Eisenberg, Germany

In historical linguistics, Weise's law describes the loss of palatal quality some consonants undergo in specific contexts in the Proto-Indo-European language. In short, when the consonants represented by * *ǵ *ǵʰ, called palatovelar consonants, are followed by *r, they lose their palatal quality, leading to a loss in distinction between them and the plain velar consonants *k *g *. Some exceptions exist, such as when the *r is followed by *i or when the palatal form is restored by analogy with related words. Although this sound change is most prominent in the satem languages, it is believed that the change must have occurred prior to the centum–satem division, based on an earlier sound change which affected the distribution of Proto-Indo-European *u and *r. The law is named after the German linguist Oskar Weise (epitaph pictured), who first postulated it in 1881 as the solution to reconciling cognates in Ancient Greek and Sanskrit. (Full article...)

Picture of the Day

Wait for Me, Daddy is a photograph taken by Claude P. Dettloff of the British Columbia newspaper The Province. It depicts a column of Canadian Army soldiers of the British Columbia Regiment (Duke of Connaught's Own) marching in New Westminster on October 1, 1940. In the foreground, five-year-old Warren "Whitey" Bernard runs out of his mother's reach towards his father, Private Jack Bernard. The photograph received extensive exposure worldwide, and was used in Canadian war-bond drives.

Updated DYK query

On 30 November 2010, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article List of largest power stations in the world, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that three of the four largest power stations in the world are in South America? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.
