My real name is Chris Horry. Nobody is really sure where Horry came from, but my Dad's genealogy research found a legendary Viking Jarl by the name of Ory, who may or may not have existed. There's also one Eystein Orre who died at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. Perhaps he's my ancestor? Nobody knows for certain. Since my family has lived in Eastern England in the area once known as Danelaw for at least 1000 years, it's likely we have at least some Viking ancestry. I did a DNA test and it did indeed find a small amount of Norwegian DNA, but how conclusive that is would be anyone's guess. For now, it's a fun mystery. Anyway, over time it turned into Orry and then in the 18th century an H was added.
I was born in England. I was raised in the market town of Boston. Most people, including many Bostonians, are blissfully unaware that Boston, MA is not the original, I blame this on the school systems. It's a pleasant little town with a lot of history, and the typical local politics any small town has, if you're into that kind of thing. I went to the University of Hull between 1996 and 1998, dropping out at the end of my second year (not one of my better moments). After leaving University, I moved to Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire (best known for ducks, and something of an armpit) and worked for an Internet Service Provider starting out doing technical support and eventually moving into the operations department. I learned more there in my first 2 weeks than I did in 2 years at University.
In 2000 I immigrated to the United States, the catalyst in my move was my wonderful fiancée (and now wife!) Kelly, whom I met on the Gameslink (now defunct) IRC network whilst maintaining a server for my employer. We have three children: Thomas, Alexander and Chester. Thomas was the baby featured in the Neonatal intensive care unit article for some years, he was born with a cardiomyopathy but has since made a full recovery. I currently reside in Florida. My current job is working for a US defense contractor. I became a US citizen in 2021.
My main Unix interest is with Linux and I've been using it for over 20 years now. My work has taught me a lot about Microsoft operating systems, but so far has not made me start to like them... but I will say the newer OSs are a giant leap in the right direction. Plus, I have nothing but good things to say about Bill Gates and his foundation.
Aside from occasional edits to Wikipedia my hobbies include Computing, collecting Firearms, Amateur Radio, Reading, History, Astronomy, Locksport and Baseball (I'm a New York Yankees fan, but due to family ties also follow the Philadelphia Phillies).
